Reuse vs Recycle: Which Is Best for Your Packaging?

We’re sure you’ve heard of the 3 R’s: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

They’re not just a catchy phrase. They form a hierarchy, showing us that the best option for the planet is to reduce what we use, then reuse as much as possible, and only recycle when we can’t do either.

But when it comes to packaging, especially cardboard boxes, the reality is that recycling is often the first (and sometimes the only) option companies think about.

At Reuseabox, we believe that while recycling is necessary, it shouldn’t always be the first choice.

Because reuse is far better for people, the planet, and for business.

The scale of the packaging problem Why Recycling cardboard Is Not Enough

Every year, the UK produces around 5 billion cardboard boxes. Demand is growing as more people shop online, with e-commerce driving unprecedented use of single-trip packaging.

The issue? Most of these boxes are used once and then immediately recycled. On the surface, that sounds positive. Cardboard has one of the highest recycling rates of any material in the UK.

But look deeper and you’ll see it’s not quite so straightforward.

The hidden costs of recycling

Recycling is far from impact-free. To recycle cardboard, the used boxes have to be collected, transported, pulped, cleaned, processed, and remanufactured into new paper. That process uses large amounts of water, energy, and carbon.

To recycle just one tonne of cardboard, you have to use 1.1 tonnes of CO2, over 16,000 kWh of energy and over 200,000 litres of water.

Now think about the impact of doing that for over 5 billion cardboard boxes….

Another problem. You can’t recycle cardboard indefinitely. Each time fibres are recycled, they get shorter and weaker. On average, paper fibres can only be recycled 4–7 times before they’re no longer usable.

That means the system still relies on virgin raw materials, freshly cut trees, to keep producing strong cardboard.

So while recycling is better than landfill or incineration, it’s not a long-term solution on its own.

And it just seems a bit wasteful to keep cutting down trees when so much packaging can be reused first.

Why reuse is better

Here’s where reuse comes in. At Reuseabox, we’re on a mission to make packaging reuse mainstream. Instead of recycling perfectly good boxes after a single trip, we help companies give those boxes a second life. Simply by reusing cardboard boxes.

And for good reasons:

  • For every tonne of cardboard boxes reused through us, you save 3.5 trees, 1.1 tonnes of carbon, 16,639 kWh of energy and 201,944 litres of water.
  • We track this impact, and every time you order used or surplus boxes, you can see exactly how you’re reducing your scope 3 emissions.
  • We also fund reforestation projects with every order through our partnership with Eden: People + Planet.

Put simply, every time a box is reused, it avoids the entire recycling process, extending the life of the fibres and reducing demand for virgin materials.

And on top of that, buying used or surplus boxes is up to 50% cheaper, as there are no manufacturing costs involved. So, you’re saving money and the planet at the same time. We call that a win-win.

When recycling still matters

Of course, recycling still has a vital role. Boxes that are too damaged to be reused need to go somewhere, and recycling ensures that the fibres aren’t lost completely. It also works hand-in-hand with reuse: after a box has been reused several times, it can then be recycled, maximising its lifespan before new material has to be made.

Think of it as a cycle: reduce first, reuse as many times as possible, then recycle at the end of life. That’s how we get the most value from the natural resources we take from the planet.

What your business can do

If you’re a business using cardboard packaging, you’ve got a choice. You can keep buying brand-new boxes that will be used once and then recycled, or you can join the growing movement of companies choosing reuse. By opting for used boxes, you:

  • Lower your packaging costs (used boxes are up to 50% cheaper).
  • Cut your environmental footprint and embrace the circular economy.
  • Join a community of businesses making a difference.

Reuse is the future

Recycling will always have its place, but it’s time to rethink our habits. With billions of boxes being produced in the UK each year, we need to prioritise reuse if we want to build a truly circular packaging system.

At Reuseabox, we believe that every box deserves more than one trip. By choosing reuse over recycling, you’re helping save resources, cut emissions, and create a more sustainable future.
