The Reuseabox Guide to FEFCO Box Styles

When it comes to cardboard packaging, it can be tricky to know which box type you need. That’s why, to make it easier for businesses to identify and choose the right design, the European Federation of Corrugated Board Manufacturers (FEFCO) created a universal code system.

What is FEFCO?

The European Federation of Corrugated Board Manufacturers (FEFCO) developed a standardised coding system back in the 1960s. Before then, packaging drawings and designs were often inconsistent, leading to confusion between suppliers and customers across different countries.

This code system solved this problem by assigning a 4-digit reference number to every common box design. These codes are now used worldwide and act as a kind of universal language for the packaging industry. By using FEFCO styles, businesses can order boxes with confidence, knowing they’ll get exactly what they need without lengthy explanations.

What is a FEFCO code?

A FEFCO code is a four-digit number that tells you exactly what type of box you’re looking at. The first two digits reveal the box’s category, while the last two define its specific design. For example, a 0201 box is a classic style with flaps that close neatly at both ends.

Why are FEFCO box styles important?

FEFCO box styles bring consistency, efficiency, and clarity to packaging design. Instead of trying to describe a box as “a standard cardboard carton with top and bottom flaps,” you can simply say FEFCO 0201, and every manufacturer or supplier will understand exactly what you mean.

This saves time, reduces errors, and ensures packaging lines can run smoothly. For businesses working internationally, the system is particularly helpful as it removes language barriers and technical misunderstandings.

Common Box Styles

Below are some of the most widely used box styles. We’ve included a short description of each as well as a mock-up to help you identify which might suit your needs best.

FEFCO 0201 – Standard Slotted Box

One of the most popular FEFCO box styles. All flaps are the same length, meeting in the middle when folded. Perfect for shipping, storage, and general use.

FEFCO 0203 – Full Overlap Slotted Box

Similar to the 0201, but with longer flaps that fully overlap. Offers extra strength and protection, particularly useful for heavier items.

Why Boxes Should Be Reused

Cardboard is one of the most recycled materials in the world, but it’s often overlooked that a box can be reused many times before it needs to be recycled. Recycling requires energy and resources, whereas reuse extends the life of the box with no extra processing. By reusing boxes, you can:

  • Cut packaging costs by up to 50%
  • Prevent unnecessary waste
  • Reduce your carbon footprint (and if you buy them from Reuseabox, we can track this)
  • Contribute to a circular economy
  • Demonstrate your commitment to sustainability to customers

The FEFCO code system is a simple but powerful way to identify, order, and use the right box for your needs. From the standard FEFCO 0201 to the reinforced FEFCO 0427, these designs cover almost every packaging requirement.

But the real difference comes when businesses commit to reusing boxes. By giving cardboard a second life, we can save money, cut emissions, and protect natural resources.
