Moving house is one of life’s most stressful milestones. Exciting? Yes. But, aside from endless paperwork, prep and expense, a lot of that stress comes from the sheer volume of things you need to remember.
Between packing every item you own, signing a million documents, and updating your address with every provider under the sun, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Even with planning, you can end up sitting on the floor the night before moving day, surrounded by half-packed boxes.
So, to save you from that decidedly un-fun experience, we’ve written you a guide!
We’ve broken your move into manageable, week-by-week stages, with a few sustainability-friendly tips along the way to keep your move kinder to the planet and your budget.
8+ Weeks Before: Plan & Declutter
Here’s a golden tip: the less you take with you, the easier and cheaper your move will be. So start early (if possible!), and start with the clutter. Dig through your loft, garage, that drawer-for-everything, and the cupboard under the stairs.
- Set your moving budget and get quotes: Account for van hire, packing supplies, end-of-tenancy cleaning, and any temporary storage.
- Declutter room by room: Sort belongings into Keep, Donate, Sell, Waste and Recycle. Then get everything listed, sent to the charity shop, or if really needed, taken to the recycling centre. A good mantra: if you haven’t touched something in 2+ years, you likely don’t need it anymore.
- Calculate your packing supplies: Most people guess far too low. A typical UK house needs between 40 and 80 boxes. To avoid running short mid-pack, check out our guide on how many moving boxes you need for a room-by-room breakdown.
6 Weeks Before: Order Supplies
Now that you know what you’re keeping, it’s time to source your packing materials. Order too few, or leave it too late, and you’ll end up stuffing your last few cupboards into bin bags. Not ideal (or planet friendly!).
Sourcing packing supplies:
- Choose your cardboard boxes: Heavy-duty, double-wall used boxes offer the same strength and protection as brand-new ones (holding up to 25kg), but cost significantly less and require zero new trees to be cut down. If you’re wondering where to find them, check out our guide on where to buy moving boxes in the UK.
- Match the box to the contents: Heavy items like books belong in small, heavy-duty boxes (a large box full of paperbacks is a guaranteed recipe for a ripped box). Lightweight, bulky items like bedding and pillows DO belong in large boxes. Still not sure which you need? Read our article on choosing the right packing boxes for moving house.
- Choose your packing materials: You’ll need tape and safety padding. Thinking of having a more sustainable move? Swap traditional bubble wrap and clear plastic tape for paper tape, eco-friendly void fill, and honeycomb protective wrap. Same protection, no single-use plastic going to landfill.
4 Weeks Before: Start Packing Non-Essentials
With a month to go, it’s time to start packing items you won’t miss before moving day.
Packing focus:
- Pack non-essential items: Begin with off-season clothing, garden tools, ornaments, and heavy items like books (except the one you’re reading!).
- Label every box clearly: Write the destination room (and a brief note on contents if needed) on both the top and sides of each box, so labels can be read even when boxes are stacked high. Add “FRAGILE” or “HEAVY” where needed. Your future self will thank you.
- Book utility transfer dates: Contact your gas, electricity, water, broadband, and council tax providers to set up disconnect and reconnect dates.
2 Weeks Before: Almost There!
You’re almost ready to go! Focus on main living areas and finalising your logistics.
- Confirm logistics: Re-confirm arrival times, contact numbers, parking access, and directions with your removal team or van hire company.
- Pack remaining rooms: Leave out only daily essentials: roughly 2 weeks’ worth of clothes, basic kitchenware, and core toiletries.
- Reduce food waste: Use up frozen and chilled food to minimize food waste and make defrosting your fridge freezer much easier.
- Arrange care for kids & pets: Book family support, a babysitter, or pet care so your little ones and furry friends stay safe and stress-free on moving day.
- Content key address records: Tell your bank, insurance providers, employer, the DVLA, and the electoral register about your upcoming change of address.
1 Week Before: Prep Your First-Night Box
Pack a dedicated “First-Night Essential Box” with everything you’ll need the moment you cross the threshold. Keep it in your car rather than loading it onto the van. Trust us, you won’t want to dig through 50 stacked boxes searching for toilet roll at 10PM! We’d also recommend packing a little suitcase of clothes and daily essentials to minimise box-rummaging during your first week.
What to include in your First-Night Box:
- Toiletries and essential prescription medications
- A kettle, mugs, tea, coffee, milk, and snacks
- Phone chargers, cables, and power banks
- A change of clothes, pyjamas, and basic bedding / pillows
- Toilet roll, hand soap, and eco cleaning wipes
- Scissors or a box cutter (to open the rest of your boxes!)
- Key personal documents and house keys
Final prep steps:
- Set up Royal Mail Redirection: Arrange this early to catch any stray mail that might slip through the cracks.
- Defrost appliances: A day or two before moving, fully defrost, clean, and dry your fridge and freezer so they’re ready for transport.
Moving Day: Final Checks
- Record meter readings: Take clear photos of your gas, electricity, and water meters right before handing over the keys.
- Perform a final walkthrough: Inspect every cupboard, loft hatch, shed, and corner to make sure nothing is left behind. Take pictures and a quick video tour of how you left the property (very helpful for preventing deposit-reclaiming issues), then lock all windows and exterior doors.
- Direct your removal crew: Let movers (or mates/family) know which box goes to which room as they unload.
- Unpack your First-Night Box first: Make the beds early so you can collapse into a fresh, comfortable bed at night. You’ve earned it!
Unpack Sustainably
Once the dust settles, keep your packing supplies in circulation. Flatten your boxes and store them somewhere clean and dry for future storage or your next move, or pass them on to neighbours, friends, or local community groups. Reusing cardboard always comes before recycling, as keeping boxes in use for as long as possible protects environmental resources.
