What It’s Like to Do Work Experience at Reuseabox – A Q&A with Cameron
At Reuseabox, we believe in creating opportunities for young people to learn, grow, and explore the world of work in a real-life business setting. Recently, we were joined by Cameron, a sixth-form student completing a week-long placement with us.
We sat down with Cameron to hear about his experience, what surprised him most, and what he learned about reuse, recycling, and running a purpose-led business.
Why did you choose Reuseabox for your work experience placement?
“I was required to arrange a placement through my sixth form, and I already knew someone who works at Reuseabox, so that helped! At first, I thought it was just a company that recycles boxes, but I quickly learnt it wasn’t anything like that.”
What surprised you the most about Reuseabox?
“The difference between recycling and reusing. Recycling requires a lot of energy and water, whereas reusing means taking a box that’s still in good condition and using it again, which is much better for the planet. Learning about their B Corp certification and 1% for the Planet membership also stood out to me and really showed me how transparent the company is.”
What did your week look like? What kinds of tasks did you do?
“Throughout the week, I got to experience a wide range of tasks across the business. On Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, I joined the rework team, where I learned how to safely use various tools and equipment, gaining valuable hands-on experience. On Wednesday, I spent the morning assembling house-moving packs and the afternoon wrapping and preparing pallets ready for dispatch. Then on Friday, I observed the marketing and sustainability team, which was eye-opening as I got to learn all about the purpose side of the business.”
Did anything else surprise you during your placement?
“I originally thought Reuseabox was purely B2B, but the house moving packs showed me that the customer base is more diverse than I expected. Also, how relaxed and friendly the workplace is, it’s clear that everyone gets along and works together productively.”
What’s one thing you’ll take away from your time at Reuseabox?
“I’ve learned a lot about what a sustainable business actually looks like behind the scenes. Not just the big ideas, but the day-to-day things that make it work. It’s definitely made me more interested in how businesses can do better for the environment and for people.”
Work experience placements like Cameron’s are more than just a week away from school. They’re a chance to inspire the next generation of change-makers. Whether they go on to lead businesses, work in sustainability, or bring new thinking to any industry, we’re proud to play a small part in helping them get started.
