Buying Used: A Real Choice, Not a Compromise

People assume a box that’s already done one job has less to give the second time round. That’s not true.

Corrugated board does not lose much strength after one use. A good used cardboard box supplier checks each box’s quality before resale. You’re getting the same strength as new, just you’re not paying for the manufacturing costs.

What you don’t get is a guarantee every box looks identical, since each one’s already had a first life. That’s a cosmetic difference, not a structural one.

How Much Can You Actually Save Buying Used?

The number that comes up again and again: buying used typically saves up to 50% against the same box brand new.

That’s because a new box carries the full cost of raw material, energy-heavy manufacturing and machine set-up. A used box doesn’t have those costs. What you’re paying for now is collecting it, checking it, storing it and getting it back to you, which is a fraction of the cost of making a new one.

No Lead Time: Solving a Problem New Boxes Can’t Fix

Cost is usually the first question, but for operations teams, lead time can be the bigger risk. A custom-made box can take two to four weeks. Even standard new stock from a wholesaler usually needs three to five working days, if it’s in stock at all.

If demand spikes, a delivery’s delayed, or a new product launches faster than planned, that wait becomes a real problem. Because a packing line with no boxes is a packing line that’s not shipping.

Used and surplus stock removes most of that risk. It is already in the warehouse. It is checked and ready to go. We can usually dispatch it within one to three working days. This includes big pallet orders. That’s not just faster. It changes how you plan.

Instead of guessing box demand weeks ahead and holding buffer stock just in case, you can order closer to when you actually need it. That frees up warehouse space and cash that would otherwise sit in packaging you’re not using yet.

For seasonal businesses, that flexibility matters most. Retailers need it before peak season. Food and drink producers need it around harvest or bottling. It can be worth as much as the box savings.

The Sustainability Case: Cutting Scope 3 Emissions

If your business reports on Scope 3 emissions, packaging is part of that number somewhere… either in what you buy or what you ship products out in. Reusing a box keeps it in circulation for another trip instead of sending it off to be recycled, which is where it would otherwise end up. That avoids the energy, water and raw material that recycling and remaking a new box would use.

Back in 2019, we developed the Reuseabox Environmental Calculator Tool with Eco3 Design (a carbon measurement consultancy) and Dr Lan Qie from the University of Lincoln, specifically to measure what reusing a box saves compared to recycling it. It’s the first tool of its kind for used cardboard boxes.

The tool looks at the whole life of the box – materials, transport, storage at our warehouse, and what happens to it at the end (recycling) – not just how it was made. The environmental data behind it comes from independent, peer-reviewed databases, updated every year, and follows recognised standards (the GHG Protocol and PAS2050).
